What about the Villa?

By Joe Gray

watvLGE

Domestic baseball leagues have existed in Great Britain since 1890. In that inaugural year, a professional competition was organized with teams representing Birmingham, Derby, Preston, and Stoke. Many of the participants were star performers from the worlds of other sports, including association football and cricket. The Birmingham team was known as Aston Villa in recognition of its close links with the celebrated soccer club of that name.

What about the Villa? brings this forgotten story from Britain’s sporting history back to life. The book starts with an exploration of the background to the league’s formation. Next comes a thorough game-by-game account of the 1890 season, which includes box scores for almost all of the contests. Finally, the subject of the league’s legacy is examined.
